Beloved 13 Time NY State Horseshoe Pitching Champion Art Tyson passed away on August 3, 2026. Arthur Oliver Tyson, lovingly known as “Mr.Clean,” was born on August 14, 1939, in New Haven, Connecticut to the late Bertha Oliver Tyson and Minister James Alexander Tyson. He was one of eleven children.
Art was well known for his skill as a horseshoe pitcher earning entry into both the NYSHPA Hall of Fame and the NHPA Hall of fame.
At one point during his horseshoe pitching career, Art was ranked the number two horseshoe player in the world. This achievement led him to becoming an author of the book Art Tyson – Second Best in the World Ain’t Too Bad. The following are excerpts from his book:
Art Tyson is the first African American to be inducted into the NHPA Hall of Fame.
Diligence and dedication, hard work and persistence were the cornerstones that drove him. Humility, love and faith in God were the principles that sustained him in his quest to be the best.
Here are what some of the greatest pitchers of all time had to say about Art.
“…and at the height of his career, there was no-one he could not beat.” – Alan Francis
“…He is an awesome horseshoe player … and Artie and I have had a lot of battles on the horseshoe pits.” – Brian Simmons
“…Art was definitely one of the top players … he was … a tough competitor.” – Walter Ray Williams Jr.

President Ellen Perry encourages all clubs to send their representatives to this meeting and encourages all members to attend and participate with their ideas and suggestions to help guide our charter.
Election of officers, by-law proposals, the state singles and doubles tournament host sites will be discussed and voted on.

Submitted by Karen Graham
Sanctioned Horseshoe Online Pitching is a Facebook Group where sanctioned members participate in sanctioned tournaments.
Each game is verified by one of the group administrators (admins are Jeremy Smith, Ken Fraser and Karen Graham). Walter Ray Williams Jr. keeps the stats and Michael Brown is the tournament director and enters the stats into Eshoe.
Each month SHOP hosts 2 tournaments. One is a Single Double (partnered with someone and it is high-low). The second one is a Single Round Robin. You may play both, however if you do so it is entered into Eshoe as a single tournament. Only 1 of your last 2 SHOP events can be counted toward your last 10 ringer percentage events.
You can play on any sanctioned horseshoe courts OR if your home courts are to NHPA specifications, you can have them sanctioned by following the instructions in the SHOP Rules & Code of Conduct.
Admins must be able to see you pitching as well as at least 8″ to 10″ around the stake. NHPA rules apply: measure all close points or questionable ringers. If they are questionable to you, then they are questionable to the admins watching so bring the camera in close to the shoes to show the admins.
Message Karen or Tag her on Facebook and let her know that you would like to play.
Each event costs $10 to enter. Karen accepts PayPal (Friends and Family) or Venmo. There are multiple winners each month. You can only win once in each tournament. Karen then holds the winnings “on the books” and this money is used for your future fees, but any contestant can request their winnings at any time.
There is a flyer posted at the beginning of each month stating start date and end date. The end date is ALWAYS the LAST Sunday of the month. This leaves about 4 weeks to get your games completed. You may pitch as many games as you wish as long as they are completed by the end of the month. We highly recommend watching one of the videos previously posted in the Facebook group to get a better idea of how these tournaments work.
If nothing else, SHOP will get you out there practicing. We hear “I practice great” all the time!
President Ellen Perry encourages all clubs to send their representatives to this meeting and encourages all members to attend and participate with their ideas and suggestions to help guide our charter.
Election of officers, by-law proposals, the state singles and doubles tournament host sites will be discussed and voted on.

Phishing Scams
The New York State Horseshoe Pitchers Association has been directly targeted by phishing scams. Using the names and email addresses of the association officers and directors, someone is circulating email messages asking for help in meeting a payment deadline.
The emails appear to be from one of the Association’s Officers (see graphic) but if you look closely at the email address – not just the senders name – you will see that the email address is fake. In this case the phisher uses the correct mailbox name, but the domain name email.com is fake. If you looked at it quickly, you may have read it as gmail.com which is a well known email domain.

The NYSHPA will NEVER send an email asking you to pay Association bills. For more information about phishing scams and how to spot them, check out What are Phishing Scams? article from the National Council on Aging.
Wishing all of our members & friends a Happy Easter. We hope there are LOADS of ringers in you Easter basket this year!

President Ellen Perry encourages all clubs to send their representatives to this meeting and encourages all members to attend and participate with their ideas and suggestions to help guide our charter.
Election of officers, by-law proposals, the state singles and doubles tournament host sites will be discussed and voted on.

… I have found an interest in the local Boy Scout program and conducted a 1 hour session for three Scouts ranked Tenderfoot through Eagle. Separately, I also sent a set of Junior shoes home with a young Scout from Long Island. Hey, It’s a start! Of interest to the Scouts, Horseshoes can provide partial fulfillment for two of their Scouting Merit Badges: Athletics and Sports.
My focus remains getting the sport back into the backyards and barnyards where most of us old timers first learned. In that regard, I hold that as a Horseshoe player, you are, by default, an ambassador of the sport. We all play a role in Junior recruitment.
I consider publicity regarding the sport as key to recruitment and have drafted an article that introduces the sport and it benefits to interested readers. I would encourage our ambassadors (you) to submit this article to the Sports Editors of as many local news publications as possible. That would be the papers that publish local school sports events and results as well as local happenings. I feel the article accurately and easily conveys the multiple benefits of our sport. The timing of the article release should be early Spring. The article and accompanying photographs are available for download here. Feel free to edit as you feel best meets your needs and list yourself as a local point of contact.
Thank you for your time. Think the future!

Elections for the NYSHPA offices of President and Vice President are due to be held at the Spring meeting.
Anyone interested in running for these offices, including the incumbents, should send a brief resume and platform by March 31st to the Election Committee Chairperson:

The NHPA council has been hard at work kicking off 2026. They held their winter meeting in Wausau at the end of January and have published the February issue of the Admin Digest. The officers and council are looking for YOUR perspective, thoughts and comments on projects and ideas to help promote the sport of horseshoes and improve the NHPA.
Take a few minutes to fill out the survey and share your perspective with the national council. They value your input!

The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association has completely transformed their monthly newsletter. It is now the Admin Digest!
The new format is clean, concise, informative and provides a great deal of insight into how the officers and council of the NHPA are working to grow the sport of horseshoes at a national level.

My name is John Kassay and, as of the Spring Meeting on April 27 2025, I have taken over the role of Youth Director. I take these duties seriously and as critical to the future of our sport.
Horseshoe’s has traditionally been a sport handed down generation to generation by Grandparents, Parents, Aunts and Uncles to their younger counterparts beginning as early as 8 years of age. We must have skipped a generation or two, because participation in the sport has been dwindling over the past few decades.
It will be my focus to reach as many of these young folks as possible and introduce them to the game. My first outing is already scheduled as a Beginners Clinic, for ages 8 to 13, in conjunction with the Town of Neversink Parks and Recreation Summer Day Camp, the week of 7 July. We’ll see how that goes.
Further, I recognize there are not many ‘Soccer Moms’ who will be willing to transport their Son or Daughter 3 hours or better to an all day Sanctioned Tournament, so my focus here will be getting pits, equipment and interest into backyards.
For now, wish me luck and I’ll keep you posted.
